Description

Digitally remastered edition of this 1970 album from the Godfather of Soul packaged in a mini LP sleeve. James Brown and the James Brown Band recorded Ain't It Funky in '70. The album's extended jams pushed the vision of Funk of the Hardest Working Man in Show Business into ever more stripped-down, focused rhythmic explorations.

"Both A Rhetorical Question and An Obvious Declaration......"

The import label LMLR (formerly Culture Factory) has been re-releasing classic albums in cardboard sleeve replicas of the original albums, remastered on black CDs that mimic vinyl records down to the labels. They've released four so far by James Brown, ' The Popcorn , ' It's a Mother ,' ' Sex Machine ' and this, 'Ain't It Funky.' 'Ain't It Funky' was also  in Japan as a bargain issue CD . Originally released as KING K-1092 in 1972 and credited to JAMES BROWN and the JAMES BROWN BAND, the album is completely instrumental except for the extended title track, the edited version of which reached #3 on the R&B and #27 on the Pop charts. Track 2 has Brown on organ, but no other musician credits. Tracks 3 and 4 are instrumental versions taken from the original vocal sessions and overlaid with lead guitar. Tracks 5, 6 & 7 were recorded sometime between 1966 & 1969 and again have no musician credits, but all have prominent lead guitar. The liner notes infer why there's so much lead guitar on the album, mentioning Brown's popularity with the "hard rock" and "underground" radio stations. Except for the title track, which was previously released on the ' Foundations Of Funk: A Brand New Bag: 1964-1969 ' set (which also has the must hear long version of "Cold Sweat"), none of the others have been released before in this form except for a pricey out-of-print 2007 Japanese CD reissue. Here's the surviving sessionography......1. Ain't It Funky Now (Parts 1 and 2)*** (James Brown) 9:262. Fat Wood (Part 1 & 2) (James Brown, Jimmy Nolan) 9:153. Cold Sweat (Alfred Ellis, James Brown) 5:17*4. Give It Up Turn It Loose** (Charles Bobbitt) 3:455. Nose Job (Bud Hobgood, James Brown) 2:306. Use Your Mother (James Brown) 3:257. After You Done It (James Brown) 3:28 (The original LP had Tracks 1 & 2 as Side One and Tracks 3-7 as Side Two)*Recorded May 1967, King Studios, Cincinatti, OH(an edited vocal version was released as KING-6110, June 1967) #1 R&B, #7 PopBernard Odum - bassAlphonzo "Country" Kellum - guitarJimmy Nolen - guitarClyde Stubblefield - drumsMaceo Parker, Jr. - tenor saxEldee Williams - tenor saxSt. Clair Pickney - baritone saxJoe Dupars - trumpetWayman Reed - trumpetLevi Rasbury - valve trombone**Recorded October 29, 1968, Criteria Studios, Miami, FL(an edited vocal version was released as KING-6213, January 1969) #1 R&B, #15 Pop"Sweet" Charles Sherrell - bassJimmy Nolen - guitarNate Jones - drumsMaceo Parker - tenor saxAlfred "Pee Wee" Ellis - alto saxSt. Clair Pickney - baritone saxWayman Reed - trumpetRichard "Kush" Griffith - trumpetFred Wesley - trombone***Recoded October 14, 1969, King Studios, Cincinatti, OH(an edited version was released as KING-6280, October 1969) #3 R&B, #24 PopJames Brown - vocals, organJohn "Jabo" Starks - co-vocalist"Sweet" Charles Sherrell - bassAlphonzo "Country" Kellum - guitarJimmy Nolen - guitarClyde Stubblefield - drumsMaceo Parker - tenor saxEldee Williams -tenor saxJoseph Davis - trumpetRichard "Kush" Griffith - trumpetFred Wesley - tromboneThe CD comes in a beautiful heavy cardboard reproduction of the original jacket, the only problem is it's one of those black CDs that resemble a record and may not play in all drives. It wouldn't register in my computer but played fine on my system. For those interested, the hit versions of Track 3 can be found on  Singles 4: 1966-1967 , of Track 4 on  The Singles Volume 5: 1967-1969  and Track 1's on  The Singles Volume 6: 1969-1970 ......
